PostHeaderIcon St Osyth CC news - March

Although snow is laying thick on the ground as I write this in early February, plans and preparations are advancing well for the start of the new cricket season at the end of April.

The Club is playing cricket again already, albeit indoors, competing in Division One of the St. James’s Place Financial Management Indoor 6- a-side Tournament at Tendring Technology College, Frinton. These Sunday evening games will be continuing through to the end of March.

At the start of March indoor practices for the senior teams will be starting at Clacton Coastal Academy Town Campus, better known to most people as Colbaynes. These will be running every Thursday evening from 1st March from 8pm to 10pm. All current and prospective members are most welcome to attend.

The times and dates for the Colts indoor practices are currently being finalised and will be posted on the Club’s website from the middle of February.

Plans are also being finalised for the Club’s schools programme under the Chance to Shine charitable scheme. The Club will be delivering 314 hours coaching in local schools, that is the second biggest commitment from any cricket club in the whole of Essex and East London. This shows the tremendous commitment from project leader Bryan McManus and his team of coaches in developing opportunities for children and young people to learn about, and participate in, cricket within the local community.

A centrepiece of the Club’s programme will be it’s hosting of the ASDA North Essex Schools Kwik Cricket Festival at Cowley Park on Friday 15th June. This now annual event is one of the highlights of the club’s year and it is always a pleasure to see 200-300 boys and girls playing and enjoying cricket on our village recreation ground.

The Club’s website will also be posting shortly the dates in early April for the Club’s participation in the NatWest CricketForce annual project. This means getting Cowley Park and the pavilion in particular in the best possible state for the start of the season. It invariably involves painting the exterior of the pavilion and whichever rooms inside need doing, together with other essential ground maintenance tasks. Although it is Cricket Club members who do the work, the whole community benefits from their efforts in seeing Cowley Park cleaned up and improved.

April’s Parish Magazine will provide full details of the club’s Annual General Meeting, which will have been held on 28th February, together with a full preview of the season ahead.

Before then however the club had a final opportunity to celebrate the successes of last season, when a party of club members travelled to Earls Colne, on Saturday 4th February, to receive the Piri Piri North Essex League Division One Championship Cup from Essex cricketer Graham Napier. It was a long and eventful evening which after speeches, auctions and raffles, didn’t see Sean Hennessy receiving the cup until 11pm. During the course of all this, heavy snow began falling outside halfway through the dinner. It meant a long and difficult journey back, very late at night, on completely untreated roads. This led to the occupants of one car having to get out and push at one stage of the journey home! Photographs of a nevertheless thoroughly enjoyable evening are included with this report.
